High temperature control performance, small footprint: particularly compact Voltacooler for demanding testing of high-voltage batteries, cells and modules

Voltavision, a pioneering test service provider in the field of high-voltage battery testing, offers Voltacoolers, specially developed temperature control units with high power density, compact dimensions and low energy consumption. Both the Voltacooler VC4.1. for space-saving temperature control of cells and modules and the Voltacooler VC40.2. for battery packs impress with their intelligent design as genuine plug & play devices with user-friendly operation. With their modular design, both are suitable for dynamic heating and cooling for a wide range of temperature control performance. Thanks to the simple control via the integrated touchscreen or via web visualization, the Voltacoolers also reduce training time and minimize operating errors. As a result of the experience gained from its own test operations, the Bochum-based company is also offering its development to other test laboratories.

Voltacooler VC4.1 for compact temperature control of cells and modules

The Voltacooler VC4.1 is specially designed for temperature control between -25 °C and +70 °C for battery modules and cells with a small installation space and has a cooling circuit with adjustable temperature and volume flow for precise control of the cooling circuit. The water-glycol mixture in the Voltacooler 4.1 circulates through the test specimen by means of a robust pump with magnetic coupling. If no water connection is available, a largely identical air-cooled version is available as the VC4.1L. There is also a flat version for mounting under the test chamber. All models are characterized by a small installation space and connections on the rear of the device, so that the Voltacooler can be installed in a space-saving manner.

Integration into the respective test field is particularly simple. A powerful PLC controls the devices. Connection to the existing test bench automation system is easily possible via Modbus TCP and CAN bus.

To reduce the global warming potential, the refrigerant R-449A with a low GWP value is used so that the Voltacoolers can also be used in future new systems in a future-proof manner. On customer request, the Voltacoolers are also available with CO2 cooling if the use of natural refrigerants is desired and the TGA (technical building equipment) permits it.

Voltacooler VC40.2: Fast temperature changes, 2 independent control circuits for 2 battery packs in the smallest of spaces

The Voltacooler VC40.2 offers temperature control between -30 °C and +70 °C for up to two battery packs in a compact format. The cooling capacity is 56 kW at +10°C and 8 kW at -30°C. The heating capacity per test circuit is 12 kW over the entire temperature range. The water-cooled system has two cooling circuits with which two test specimens can be tempered simultaneously but independently of each other. With dimensions of 1,200 x 800 x 2,186 mm, the VC40.2 requires significantly less space than two single-circuit systems and enables a particularly space-saving installation, as all connections are routed via the roof of the system.

Controlled by a powerful PLC, the Voltacooler can be seamlessly integrated into an existing test bench automation system via Modbus TCP and can also be controlled and monitored manually via the freely positionable touchscreen.

All Voltacoolers have been specially developed for use in our own test laboratories and therefore meet all the requirements for temperature control of energy storage test specimens. “Our own experience has always been incorporated into the design, so that the Voltacoolers have everything that is needed for the temperature control of test specimens of high-voltage components in modern test laboratories - and in the smallest possible space,” explains Julian Stentenbach, Managing Director of Voltavision. “Furthermore, we are always open to more specific requirements from our customers and are happy to develop our standard devices further in order to offer customized solutions.”
